Mutual Funds Weekly: Jack Bogle Was The Greatest Investor Who Never Managed Money

Don’t miss these top money and investing features:

The tributes — well-deserved — poured in for John C. Bogle, the founder of index-fund giant Vanguard Group and an outspoken champion for low-cost, straightforward investing, who passed away last Wednesday.

Jack Bogle in life was a legend, a hero to individual investors and many on Wall Street. Bogle called it as he saw it — and much of what he observed about Wall Street and the mutual fund business he didn’t like. Bogle believed that when it comes to investing, you don’t always get what you pay for — cheaper is better, and matching the market’s return is not only good enough, but desirable from both a risk-reward and tax standpoint. Bogle’s blunt message to investors: keep portfolios simple and diversified, and be patient. That’s good advice on many levels.

Investors may never see another Jack Bogle. Indeed, they may not have to, because he achieved so much for them.
