British expats on Spain’s holiday islands enjoy pints in the sunshine as coronavirus rules ease up.

Spain’s Balearics is home to a good number of British expats, all of whom are raising their glasses to celebrate the first day of lockdown restriction relaxations. Mallorca is an all-time favourite with British expat retirees, all of whom have been denied their favourite beers for 59 very long days. One happy couple told local reporters they hope the UK loosens up its regulations very soon as regards opening its bars and pubs.

All three islands, Mallorca, Majorca and Ibiza, are now in phase one of the Spanish government’s de-escalation of lockdown, the starting point for a move towards a normality which ended as 2020 began. Restaurants, hotels, cafes and a variety of small businesses can now reopen, much to the relief of their customers and owners. Visits to family and friends are now allowed and shopping trips don’t now need an appointment, whilst driving within the provinces is now allowed.

As this is just phase one of a planned return to normality, social distancing is still an obligation and strict healthcare measures must be observed. Some businesses have yet to open due to imposed limits on the number of customers allowed at any one time. Overall, expats on the popular islands are all in favour of the present situation and are looking forward to further relaxations and freedoms as the threat of the virus fades.
