As Britain’s latest general election looms, British expats living and working in European Union member states are plotting to tip its results towards a second referendum simply by using their votes.
The strategy is simple, involving forgetting previous party loyalties and voting for whichever party comes out in favour of remaining in the EU. The growing feeling amongst British expats in Europe that the UK is ‘making refugees out of its own people’ is growing and should lend strength to the call to vote tactically.
An estimated 1.3 million Britons now live in EU member states, with the vast majority wishing to continue their chosen lifestyles. Very few have any concrete idea about their legal statuses in a post-Brexit world, with using postal and proxy votes to block Brexit entirely seeming to be the only sensible way out of the mess.
Expats are being advised to use tactical voting websites in an effort to stop Brexit in its tracks as well as attempting to persuade family and friends back home to do the same. Those who’ve lived outside the UK for more than 15 years and are disenfranchised as a result are being encouraged to persuade all contacts in the UK to use the same tactical voting technique.
One Briton living in Italy has founded a British in Italy website in order to advise worried Britons as to their rights post-Brexit. Speaking with a reporter from The Times, he said his members are all sad about the UK’s EU divorce and are ready and willing to do anything legal which may prevent it. The group is affiliated with British in Europe, who’ve been working to stop Brexit and its devastating effects on British expats living all across Europe, very few of whom are prepared to be forced back to the UK.
