Infinite Reality Acquires Napster For $207 Million To Create A Music Metaverse

Infinite Reality, an AI and metaverse-focused company, has acquired the iconic music platform Napster for $207 million, with plans to transform it into a music metaverse. The acquisition aims to take the music experience beyond traditional mobile and social platforms, ushering in a new era of immersive, 3D virtual experiences.

Napster, which was once a pioneer in music piracy before evolving into a legitimate music streaming service, will now offer “branded 3D virtual spaces” where users can enjoy virtual concerts, socialize with friends during “listening parties,” and purchase exclusive digital and physical merchandise. Napster’s CEO, Jon Vlassopulos, will remain in charge and has expressed excitement about the company’s shift from “mobile social” experiences to immersive, virtual environments.

“The internet has evolved from desktop to mobile, then social, and now we’re entering the immersive era,” Vlassopulos stated. Under the new ownership, Infinite Reality envisions a future where music fans can interact with artists in their own virtual spaces, attend live shows, and buy unique merchandise, all within the metaverse.

Napster, which recently issued platform tokens on the Algorand blockchain in 2022, will further its Web3 expansion under Infinite Reality. The company is also planning to introduce AI-powered tools for musicians, including community management agents and analytics dashboards to help artists track fan engagement and boost cross-promotion with other entertainment properties like esports teams.

After changing ownership multiple times, Napster was relaunched as a music streaming service and recently acquired by Algorand and crypto investment firm Hivemind in 2022.

The acquisition is expected to close in the coming weeks, with Infinite Reality aiming to establish Napster as the leading immersive music platform, connecting artists and fans in new and innovative ways.
