Leeds Bradford has become the latest UK airport to outline plans to install new generation scanners at security.
The airport is partnering with technology firm Leidos to roll out its ClearScan computed tomography (CT) scanners.
The first of four new lanes – which will also feature Leidos’ ProPassage automated tray return systems – are expected to be installed in the fourth quarter of this year, with completion by early 2024.
The UK government has set a deadline of June 2024 for major airports to replace existing 2D screening technology with more advanced CT security scanners.
As well as eliminating the need for passengers to remove liquids and large electrical items from their hand luggage, the scanners will also enable the lifting of the 100ml limit on liquids.

Several UK airports including Teesside and London City have already relaxed the limit on liquids in hand luggage, following the rollout of CT scanners.
In addition Leeds Bradford will install Leidos’ Mosaic enterprise software platform, which will give the airport “access to a real-time business intelligence tool to better manage the passenger flow at checkpoints, security bottlenecks and planned system downtime”.
Commenting on the news Damian Ives, chief operating officer and accountable manager at Leeds Bradford airport, said:
“This is an important component of our plan to modernize LBA. When installed, Leidos’ industry-leading equipment will make travelling through our airport a faster and smoother experience for passengers, enabling us to operate more efficiently and continue to meet the highest standards of safety.”
