As the rush to discover a new, expat-friendly paradise on earth ratchets up, Vietnam’s position in the latest survey has soared to 10th place.
During the past decade, Vietnam’s popularity as an expat destination has been steadily growing, especially with those already living outside their countries of origin. On offer is stunning scenery, friendly locals, a lively culture and a delicious, healthy cuisine. Affordability is good, and a positive work/life balance creates the perfect ambience for expats sick of ever-changing visa rules and overbearing bureaucracy. As a result, the country has leapt eight points from last year’s survey position to 10th best overall destination for expatriates.
According to the survey, the majority of new arrivals were easily able to adjust to the culture and way of life, feeling at home after only a few months. One important plus point was the willingness of local people to encourage new arrivals to join in regular cultural events as a way of integrating into Vietnamese society. Expats arriving to work were pleasantly surprised by salary increases aimed at giving new arrivals more money to spend exploring the land’s history and natural beauty.
Ho Chi Minh City is home to over half of all expats in Vietnam, with accommodation at all budget levels and an amazing choice of the country’s ultra-healthy cuisine found everywhere from restaurants to street food markets. Popular jobs are found mostly in the tech, English teaching and tourism sectors, but finding one might take a while as locals can do the same for far lower wages.
