United Airlines says it will operate its largest ever transatlantic schedules next summer, with new routes, additional frequencies and an earlier start to the season.
The US carrier will become the first and only airline to offer nonstop flights between the US and Faro, with a four-times-weekly service from New York’s Newark airport starting on 24 May, 2024.
The Boeing 757-200 route will add to United’s existing Portguese services between Newark and Lisbon, Washington Dulles and Lisbon, Newark and Porto, and Newark and Ponta Delgada in the Azores.
Meanwhile the carrier will resume seasonal flights between Newark and Reykjavik on 23 May next year, for the first time since summer 2022, and will add second daily frequencies between Newark and Brussels, and between Washington and Rome.
Several seasonal transatlantic routes will also recommence earlier in 2024, as follows:
- Washington – Lisbon from 15 February
- Washington – Barcelona from 15 February
- Washington – Rome from 15 February
- Newark – Nice from 30 March
- Chicago -Rome from 30 March
- Chicago – Milan from 30 March

Commenting on the news Patrick Quayle, United’s senior vice president of global network planning and alliances, said:
“United has the most flights to the most destinations across the Atlantic and we’re now giving our customers even more flexibility and choice when planning their trips abroad.
“Whether customers are looking to travel during peak season or shoulder season, visit the most popular tourism destinations or discover a hidden gem, the scope and scale of our network makes United the easy choice for transatlantic travel.”
The news comes as US carrier JetBlue this week announced plans for two new seasonal routes to Dublin and Edinburgh for summer 2024, bringing its fledgling transatlantic network to six destinations.
