Swiss is expanding its Air Rail service with new connections set to operate between Zurich Airport and the resort destinations of Lucerne and Interlaken.
The new services can be booked now for travel on or after December 11.
Previously known as Airtrain, the renamed Air Rail service in partnership with Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) was established in 2019 with a connection between Lugano and Zurich, and has since added routes between Zurich airport and the Swiss cities of Basel and Geneva, and between Zurich and Munich.
SBB will offer a new direct service between Zurich airport and Interlaken (with no change of train required) from the start of the new rail timetables in December.
The rail ticket is included in the fare for the Swiss flight and the entire trip can be booked on swiss.com or via a travel agency. Those that book first and business class on the airline will also benefit from first-class rail travel on their SBB connection.
This news brings the Swiss Air Rail network to 11 destinations.
Swiss CCO, Tamur Goudarzi Pour, commented:
“As part of our strategic partnership with SBB, we are steadily expanding our Swiss Air Rail network, not least by adding attractive new tourist destinations.
“As a result, our inflight guests from elsewhere in Europe and all over the world can now travel swiftly and smoothly to some of the most appealing places in Switzerland. It’s seamless intermodality, to the benefit of all our customers.”
Véronique Stephan, head of Passenger Services Markets at SBB, added:
“With these further expansions to our SWISS Air Rail network, we are making it even more attractive for air travellers to Switzerland to reach their final Swiss destination by train, with all its traffic-free comfort and convenience.
“Thanks to our new direct rail services from and to Zurich Airport, Interlaken and Lucerne can now be reached from Tokyo, New York or São Paulo with just a single change en route.”
Delta recently expanded its air-rail programme in Europe to include connections from Brussels, Manchester (for flights operated by Virgin Atlantic), Rome Fiumicino and Zurich airports to more than 20 destinations.
