Frontier Airlines will no longer charge you a fee if you change your flight more than 60 days before your departure date. But if you wait too long to make a change the cost of procrastination just went up.
USA Today reports that Frontier raised the fee for flight changes make between 14 and 59 days of departure from $49 to $79.
Changes made less than 14 days ahead incur at $119 fee, which remains unchanged from the policy in effect prior to September 13.
In conjunction with the fee schedule change, Frontier has been advertising that it charges no fees for changes made 60 days ahead.
But that’s actually less generous than the September 2018 policy it replaces, which allowed no-fee changes up to 90 days in advance.
Frontier is one of the few airlines to offer the opportunity to make changes at any point beyond 48 hours of booking without a fee (Southwest Airlines is another).
It’s also unusual that a low-cost carrier would bypass an opportunity to charge a fee for a service.
From the airline’s perspective, however, it’s more likely that flights cancelled well in advance can be rebooked, so the fee-free changes can be viewed as an incentive for travellers that can also benefit the airline, according to One Mile at a Time writer Ben Schlappig.
