Berlin Tegel is the capital’s most important airport. Yet reports from Germany indicate it could be closed for two months because of a sharp fall in passengers owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The closure is expected to happen in the coming weeks, although no definite date has been decided.
Any decision by the FBB (Berlin’s airport authority) would have to be approved by Germany’s Federal Aviation Office.
If the latter approves, and there is no reason why not, then all flights using Tegel would be transferred to Schonefeld which, being further from the capital, is less convenient.
Meanwhile Berlin’s new Brandenburg airport is still on track to open on October 31, having this week received approval from building authorities.
The plan is that Tegel would be closed soon after however there may yet be changes.
Other European airports which have suspended operations because of Covid-19 include Paris Orly and London City.
